Dr Fionnuala Hickey joined the Fighting Blindness team in March of this year. In her role as Research Manager, she is responsible for coordinating all research activities of the organisation. Fionnuala was awarded her undergraduate degree in Human Genetics from Trinity College Dublin before completing her PhD under the supervision of Prof Tom Cotter in University College Cork in 2005. Prior to taking up this position in Fighting Blindness, Fionnuala was a senior research fellow in the Trinity Health Kidney Centre where she also acted as supervisor and scientific advisor to the linked biobank and registry. She has also worked in various research positions in Trinity College Dublin, University of Chicago, University College Dublin, Duke University Medical Centre and the University of Sheffield. Fionnuala also has extensive expertise in project management and in communicating complex scientific information to diverse audiences. She is currently a member of the Irish Health Research Forum (IHRF) steering group, the Research and Information subgroup of the Rare Disease Plan Oversight Implementation Committee and the Rare Kidney Disease Biobank steering committee.
